About Us
Benenden Healthcare is a mutual 'not for profit' Friendly Society run for its members.
More than 100 years of caring.
2005 was our centenary year and we still operate with the same mutual respect
we always have.
We’re a mutual organisation, not a medical insurer. Our members club together
so they can get the first class medical help they need, when they need it most.
Our mutual status is very important to our members, who share our belief that
we should help each other. Our approach has worked successfully for over 100 years
because it's founded on common sense and mutual trust. Benefits may vary according
to the needs of the member, the resources available or over time.
As a member, we simply ask you to use your judgement when you choose to ask for
our help and in return we’ll use our judgement to take account of your individual
needs: this is described as discretionary. And as we're not a medical insurer
you don't pay insurance premium tax on your contributions.
The Society is run for its members; this means that every member can get involved
and influence the way in which the Society is run and the services it offers.
The Society is governed by a
Committee of Management consisting of 12 ordinary members who are elected to take responsibility for
the overall running of the Society and to represent the membership’s best interests.
(See our
What being a member means section for more details).
The Society's contractual business (the provision of tuberculosis benefit) is
authorised by the FSA. The remainder of the Society's business is undertaken on
a discretionary basis. The Society is subject to FSA requirement for prudential
management. As a 'not for profit' Friendly Society we are governed by our
Rule Book.
